Babylon’s Identity and Demise
Revelation Chapter 18 [1]
• Fallen: Repeated twice for emphasis = Epesen in Greek
• Great: Megas in Greek
This scripture defines Babylon as ‘great’ = MEGAS! [Strongs #3173] Revelation 17 & 18 has many references to ‘mega’! Also, it’s not the first appearance of the Greek word Epesen [fallen] also in Revelation 14:8:
“And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.”
“For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies. 4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, My people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities. 6 Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double. How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.” Revelation 18:3-7
As we examine the scriptures, we have learned the formula of the elements of mystery Babylon; verses 3 through 7 describe five reasons for her punishment:
- 1. Verse 3 & 4: She led the world into joining the rebellion against God and were corrupted – Just as in Ancient Babylon 2000 years ago, currently the USA has the largest Jewish population worldwide. And the tightest concentration is in New York City USA. [Also see Jeremiah 50:6-8, 28; 51:5-6 which states: “flee from the land of Babylon”]
- 2. Verse 5 & 6: Her sins have reached Heaven and include her ‘normal’ treatment of others and will be repaid double [to name a few: blasphemy, abortion, homosexual marriage, promiscuity sex before marriage, greed, immoral behaviors of all kinds]
- 3. Verse 7: She wallowed in luxury
- 4. Verse 7: She glorified herself
- 5. Verse 7: She refused to acknowledge God’s sovereignty – and is so arrogant she assumes that life will continue on easy street forever. She believes she’s in complete control, knows no loss, no reason to mourn, how ironic she will soon mourn her own destruction.
The chapters concluding verses [Rev 18:8-24] outline the horrors to come upon the city/nation. At the end of verse 23, we learn one of the great reasons why Babylon/America suffers these terrifying punishments.
“Because your businessmen were the ‘mega’ ones of the earth”
By their ‘sorceries’ [Greek word ‘pharmakeia’ Strongs #5331] all nations were deceived. They made a deal with the devil … money & power in exchange for their successes carrying out any wickedness against God or His children.
- Merchant Greek = Emporoi = English ’emporium’ – This merchant or ’emporium’ gives us the view of international travelers who imports/exports worldwide.
- Delicacies – In the Greek it’s ‘strenous’ [Strong’s #4764=over, strength, wantonness, luxury, eager desire’] The root word actually means ‘excessive strength which longs to break froth.’ Sounds like pent-up supply and demand. The usage also appears like a nation caught up in deficit spending… buy now, pay later.
place on the only nation in the world that fits all the criteria listed in God’s holy word … the United States of America.

Richard Coombes encouraged any/all who may fear what’s coming. No need to fear if you know the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ, the King of Kings … if you have repented of your sins asking the King for His forgiveness, accepted His sacrifice and shed blood in your place, if you earnestly live your life for His honor and glory, then you will escape the horrors to come. Pray and seek His forgiveness now before it’s too late.

I received some contrary views, and by their tone, Richard’s report and my summaries are not being read or even considered; that’s unfortunate. Clearly Richard’s conclusions are controversial BUT the research and data he compiled in his eleven year study is valuable for us whichever ‘Babylon’ concept we ascribe to. In my view, it is reasonable and logical that the USA is the ’Mystery Babylon’ of the Bible. — Annette

Mr. Coombes was also a noted author of Biblical Prophecy books, including “America, The Babylon” Volumes 1 & 2, which were bestsellers on Amazon in 1998-99. He was also a national speaker on Biblical issues. He was an alumnus of The Moody Bible Institute of Chicago and Calvary Bible College of Kansas City.
